This review examines the frequency domain approach employed for pitch shifting, specifically utilizing the phase vocoder method, which fundamentally operates through FFT and inverse FFT processes. It is important to note that the term “vocoder” can be somewhat misleading in this context, as it does not pertain to traditional vocoding techniques.

While FFT processing does introduce some latency, the use of relatively small buffers allows for precise adjustment of the input signal, effectively compensating for this fixed latency during final mixing.

The technique involves complex mathematical algorithms to extract frequency components along with their magnitudes from the audio signal. Once the frequencies are identified, they can be altered in a controlled manner, facilitating real-time pitch and frequency shifting.

When modifications are applied uniformly across magnitudes, the inverse FFT is executed, resulting in an alteration of the audio pitch. Similar to the time domain approach employed in JAX ESSENTIAL SERIES P2, this method can generate “chipmonkeyfication” effects due to the shifting of transients and formants in proportion to the fundamental frequency.

However, this frequency domain method also presents certain side effects. The resulting audio may exhibit a slight smear effect across its full range. Notably, the grainy artifacts produced are generally less perceptible than those commonly associated with time domain techniques. However, this approach may not be optimal for audio with pronounced transient characteristics, though it tends to yield commendable results with more ambient audio material.
